Some of you may be questioning where summer disappeared after such a hot June! We’ve been below average 13 of the first 16 days of July, and I don’t foresee a big warm up anytime soon. Although I’m not complaining too much, I am a fan of summer and hate to think of fall-ish weather already! One really good thing about this cooler weather is that many of you have probably been able to enjoy the great outdoors with your furry friends without breaking into a sweat. By the way, here is a photo of us after a warm rain soaked us on a recent walk. It felt refreshing!
Summer is full of travel, and I’m very much looking forward to my yearly trip to northern Minnesota at the end of August. Have you taken a summer trip yet, and if so, was your pet allowed on vacation too? We’ve discussed traveling with your pets in a past blog, but there’s a new way for them to travel long distances in first class! It’s called Pet Airways. What an ingenious concept, and I’m amazed it took this long for someone to test it out. Unfortunately, we have to travel outside of Iowa to GET to an airport served by this pampered pet travel service, and the closest location is Chicago. They are currently serving 5 large cities: Chicago; Denver; Washington D.C./Baltimore; L.A.; New York. Price-wise, they may be able to beat any human airline shipping your pet in their dark & scary cargo. Here’s a link to their website: http://petairways.com/
So what do you think? Would you book a flight with Pet Airways if it served Des Moines? How about their prices? I wish I would have pursued my private pilot’s license, especially if this idea takes off(pun intended…) Do you suppose a special pet train or private vacation shuttle/bus service would be successful? I’m not planning on testing these concepts out, but if you decide to attempt it, I’d be happy to take a cut of your profits as the idea finder!
Since we shared some incredible hail photos Wednesday morning, we moved Weather Lab Wednesday to this morning’s show. If you missed it, here’s a photo of Chase’s injured nose. Click on the pic and look closely. You’ll see where a little Boston Terrier took some of the skin. In a way, Chase brought it on himself by getting worked up around the little dog, but this little dog had BIG attitude. Chase is doing just fine and his nose continues to heal at a rapid pace.
Until next week- Bryan & Chase ^..^
I know people travel with their pets all the time but Personally id be to afraid of taking Cali on a trip with me that involved flying or parting from her … may be its bc she was abused by her first owners and i dont like her being with a stranger w/o me or other family members around. Poor girl has been through enough. We never take her anyways .. he always take her to my parents house and she spends time with them and their dogs playing and enjoying herself
.. it works better for all of us ha.
Question… How often or bad has your dogs hurt the pads on their paws? … Cali once again last night ripped a good sized chunk out of one of hers but this time it was the one farther up on her leg.. we had went out to play and she started limping, when i went to see what was wrong she took off so i figured she scraped it and then was fine .. when we got in she followed me and sort of moped so i checked them inside thinking i would find a small cut but nothing big but when i pulled my hand away it was covered in blood and then realized what happend… i wrapped it up for awhile to get it to stop bleeding but poor girl has been favoring it since.
We do worry about our pets when they are sick don’t we.
My cat got in a fight with a raccoon once, and boy was he hurting. He spent the night at the vet’s office. He was worse than they first thought.
I went to clip his nails, and found they were all broken off. He really had to fight for himself.
I do not think I would use a plane for my pets. They would be too skittish I think.
This weather has been so good!!!
take care sandy
I know I would not let my pets fly. I don’t like flying and I am sure they wouldn’t be happy with it either. They like having all 4 paws on the ground. Sammy doesn’t like to ride in the car I can’t imagine he would like to fly.
I can’t see me sending Freedom on a plane . She is not good with fireworks and loud noises , the sound of the plane would send her in to a fit . If we go on a trip she comes with us or our neighbors will watch her in her own home .
I think for people who’s pet could fly it is a good thing !
Stay safe all .

I have flown quite a bit and with pets. I have to say the best was with United. We were moving back from Hawaii and had a lloonngg delay and the employees kept giving me updates and even made sure he had treats and fresh water. We ended up with landing in a different city and put in a hotel overnight and they even made sure it was pet friendly.
Bryan, can you tell me where you stay in Minnesota? We have taken our dogs (2 Yorkies) to Minnesota twice on vacation but it takes me forever finding a place that takes pets. I love the picture of you and Chase by the fire pit, that looks like just the kind of place I would go to.
Hi Vanessa-
Chase hasn’t torn a paw pad, but he has had some chapped paw pads before. I’ve used Bag Balm to take care of the chapping. I would have your vet take a look at Cali’s paw pad to make sure everything is okay.
Hi Robin-
I actually stay at my parents’ cabin on the Gunflint Trail in far northeastern Minnesota. I’m not sure of places up that way that accept pets, but I guarantee there are some. If you do a google search for pet-friendly resorts in northern Minnesota, I think you may be able to find something.
