Wow, I started a blog discussion Wednesday and never got back to it! Time to slow down and let life catch up. It’s too short to be so busy! A couple topics to touch on this week, and we’ll get to the heated topic in just a minute.
First, I’ve mentioned the Animal Rescue League and other Iowa shelters in past blogs, but after hearing a recent and disturbing trend, I thought it might be a good time to talk a little more in depth. In recent media reports, Tom Colvin at the ARL has discussed a recent influx of pets into their shelter, with a majority of those dropped off being cats. Although area shelters usually have a rush this time of year(I’m not exactly sure why,) this time around seems a bit more extreme. As the ARL continues to take on more animals, they are squeezing their newly expanded space and running low on supplies! If you have extra pet food, blankets, toys, even cleaning supplies you would like to donate, please contact the ARL at 515-262-2612. Cash donations are also appreciated. You can also contact any pet shelters near you to help.
Now on to a topic that REALLY chaps my hide. How many of you ‘raised hackles’ when you heard about these jack@$$es busted in the nation’s largest(6 state) dog-fighting ring?? UNBELIEVABLE! What makes me even more sick to my stomach is to hear what these worthless piles did to some of the dogs when they were finished with them. Maybe someone should put them in a ring, let them fight to the death, and toss them into a river or worse when finished. I sure hope the 4 Iowans charged are found innocent(we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt until found guilty, because I’d like to hope one of our local teachers wasn’t involved.) Here’s the story from KCCI: http://www.kcci.com/news/19998229/detail.html#
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this outrageous topic, and I’m sure we’ll generate quite a few. Please keep in mind our moderators will not allow use of bad language, so be careful in your responses. One last thought from my soapbox…any low-life piles found guilty should rot in jail for life! Okay, off the soapbox and onto possible storms again this afternoon.
Have a wonderful and safe weekend! Until next week- Bryan & Chase ^..^
i do not see how anyone can be involved with this so called sport. both the dog handlers and the people who watch.
they need to place themselves as the dogs see it, then maybe they would think twice about the pain inflicted on these animals.
it is just despicable that these things go on. hasn’t anyone learned from the mistakes of michael vicks?
The people involved in the dog fighting should have meat hung around their neck and then be put in the ring with the dogs. On 2nd thought that would be to good for them. I can’t say on here what I would really like to do to those people. I don’t understand how people can watch this kind of thing. It makes me sick to even think about. I know the brother of Kevin & Ryan Tasler as he used to be a city cop in our small town. Don’t know if he had anything to do with this or even knew about it but if he did he should be fired immediately and charged with the rest of them. We can only hope these people get charged to the full extent of the law and have to spend some time in prison.
I couldn’t agree more with comments. I do hope that they are innocent, but the more we hear, the more it doesn’t sound like they are.
I sit here and can’t even imagine anyone doing this to another animal. When the Michael Vic story broke, some folks defended him because dog fighting has been a part of some “cultures” for some time. I find that so hard to believe and to agree with.
I look at my little Lucca everyday and give him hugs and thank God that he is healthy and mine. I couldn’t imagine this little guy being purposely hurt in any way.
The other thing Brian didn’t mention is the ARL is housing the dogs that were found in the raid. They will need help with those dogs as well. I sure hope they come out of all of this okay.
I think the State of Iowa is ranked 36th when it comes to the DogFighting Law . I think it is a Class D Felony with a max of 5 years and a fine up to $5000.00 , and if you are a spectator its an Aggrauated Misdemeanor with a 2 years max and a fine of $5000.00 . I think the Law needs an update !
The rest of the blog would be marked Inappropriate Content , enough said!!
Stay Safe All .

In one word this is disgusting! I don’t get fighting in the first place…boxing, mixed martail arts, etc. much less dog fighting. At least with human fighting it’s volunary (at least the legal kind of fights are), a dog has no choice in the matter. Makes me sick to my stomach.
Hello all! Oh, Bryan! I am absolutely sick over all of this! It was a punch in the stomach to learn of this story! I will step aside and get all of the inappropriate things out before going on. I remember a blog a few months ago from one of our fellow bloggers warning us that dogs had been disappearing from yards. I remember responding that, although I lived in Woodward and a ways away from where they were disappearing, I would warn my neighbors about the disappearing dogs. I also remember saying that dog fighting has a long reach. Little did I know…
If dogfighting and cockfighting weren’t such lucrative businesses, they would not be so widespread or successful. The fact that these two practices are ingrained in some cultures is hard to deny, but these people need to accept the fact that these practices are against the law and they will be arrested for engaging in the practice. Hard to accept that our own Central Iowa was part of the focus of such a large sting.
I totally agree! The law needs to be udated! This practice is cruel and serves NO GOOD!!!!! It causes more problems on down the road. I certainly hope these poor dogs that are currently at the ARL can be saved and eventually found GOOD LOVING UNDERSTANDING homes! I hope that these unfortunate animals can learn a loving and gentle touch. Bless all of the workers at the ARL!
Take care everyone and give your babies extra loves today. Pam
This story was heart-wrenching, to say the least. I can’t fathom how people can be so blatantly careless and cruel. Unfortunately people will do many things for money and so-called entertainment. A very sad event, indeed.
I’ve included some links that might bring some light to this issue.
