Welcome to Chattin’ With Chase!!

Wow, what was just a thought a little over a month ago has blossomed into a full-blown blog, and we’re already introducing it! Thank you so much for taking time to join in the conversation. We’ll update our blog every Wednesday, and chat about dogs on the days in between. Feel free to chime in with your comments, stories and questions, and help us create a chat room to solve our canine concerns.

For those of you who may not be familiar with Weather Lab Wednesday, my best friend and confidant is my 3 1/2-year-old black lab Chase. He was born in northern Minnesota to a wonderful family who raises championship labs.

Most of you probably weren’t aware, but a couple months prior to Chase, I had adopted a black lab who was mysteriously dropped off at KCCI. Station staff helped me name her Stormy. Unfortunately, this poor, tiny pup became very ill because it was taken from its mother too soon and wasn’t getting the appropriate “motherly” nutrients. After just a week, Stormy passed away. It absolutely broke my heart. Isn’t it amazing how quickly you become attached to a pet? They are a part of your family!

I wasn’t sure if I was ready for another puppy so soon. My Mom and I talked about the possibility for awhile, and on Christmas Day 2003, Chase came wondering around the corner at my parents’ home! Mom and Dad researched kennels, and I HIGHLY recommend you do the same if you’re looking for a puppy addition. There’s nothing that chaps my hide more than a puppy mill.

Now back to Chase, since I’m rambling and you’re probably busy. The process of coming up with an AKC name was fun. I wanted to tie his name in with my other love, weather. Here’s what we came up with: Captain’s Kennels Stormy Sky Chaser. As AKC names generally do, we started with the kennel name where he was born, and I tied in little Stormy and my job on severe weather days(chasing.) We’ve shortened it to Chase, although I’ve heard Chaser and even Chance!

Chase joins us each Wednesday, either live in studio, or in photo form. We try and come up with a new topic each week, and give tips on raising your pup. This is where you’ll come in on our blog! Share your ideas, and we’ll chat about them. Plus, I may even share your idea on air one of these Wednesdays!!

I’ll get more into our tips next week. Until then, have a wonderful week ahead!

  1. Chase is a stud! He’s a handsome black lab. He looks strong and healthy!!!

  2. Thanks Heather! You’re very kind! Chase is a HUGE blessing in my life, and it’s been fun having him help me with on-air dog tips the past few years. I was just talking with someone the other day about creating a dog photo day, like Friday’s Fido, or something like that, so we can share pics of other Iowa dogs too!

  3. We have two labs that have championship bloodlines. Our oldest, Cain, was #1 in the state for Derby dogs in 2004 for the MIRC (Mid Iowa Retreivers Club). Our newest addition, Abel, comes from a kennel up on Wisconsin. Hes just 3 months old an is ornery as all get out! Anyway, my point of the story is that AKC names are so fun to come up with. Cain’s sires name is Running with the Devil, and is called Devil. He was the 2002 national Derby champion. So Cain’s name is The Devils Raising Cain. And our newest one is Drake Havens Ready Willing and Abel. We now have Cain and Abel. Anyway, sorry for babbling. I am a dog lover for sure!

  4. Love the AKC names!! No worries on the comments, chat away! Congrats on a good line of pups. Do you just show, or are the dogs dock jumpers or hunters as well? I bet you have to keep them out of the hunting fields because judges might frown on scrapes and bumps?

  5. They aren’t show dogs. They are bred for field trial dogs. Cain is close to a master hunter, and Abel, just being a pup, has only masterd chewing shoes and toilet paper from the roll!
Cain has many “war wounds” from hunting, and has the “manly” scars to prove it!! (and we have the vet bills to back him up!)

  6. Ah ha! Field trial isn’t easy! My Mom and Dad have 2 German Wirehaired Pointers, both into field trials. They’ve spent HOURS in the fields of Minnesota, and even did a field trial near Perry, Iowa earlier this spring. Good luck to Cain on that Master Hunter designation!

Isn’t it amazing how dogs are so attracted to toilet paper rolls, and even the empty ones? Chase cruises the bathroom garbage cans looking for empty rolls, then spreads the pieces around the house!

  7. HI! Is anyone going to take their dog to the Sportsman’s Warehouse event on Labor Day weekend? I have a 2 year old black lab, Hayden, and he is a master dock diver! I would like to see how he does. He loves, loves, loves the water (like almost all labs) and think he would just love to do this.

  8. that sounds like a lot of fun! details?

  9. also,

  12. If Im home I do try to catch the adorable adoptables segment. Its a great way to get those animals into great homes. We are usually swamped with visitors & phone calls after it airs!

  13. Happy Wednesday! Hayden and I are not part of the dock dogs organization yet…I wish I could find the time! I take Hayden to Raccoon River and to my family’s cabin in NE Iowa to swim every time I can. But I am definetely taking him to the Sportsman’s Warehouse event. By the way, I think Hayden and Chase are long lost cousins! They look so much alike! Very handsome! I volunteer for Fridays Fido Dog picture you were writing about…I’m such a proud mama! :)

  14. Hi Lindsay!
Chase thanks you for the kind comment! His Grandma is actually from Critter Creek Farm in Adel, so if any of you have adopted from Meredith Kuhn, your pup may be related to Chase!
